Writing Hubs and Articles That Sell

All Writing Is Selling
Writing articles is fun, it provides an outlet for your creativity, ideas and energy but it is important to remember what you want to get from the experience and more importantly what you want your reader to get from the experience.
Your writing should leave an impression on the reader and, as we all know, first impressions count and it may be your first and only chance to engage with the reader. Bring your reader back time and again and you have a fan, a customer and in many cases a friend.
Almost every time we write we do it to sell something. Now, before you get all uppity on me and say ‘How dare you! I never write just to sell something’ let me explain.
When we write anything down with the intention of others reading it we are always trying to get one or more ideas across. The idea may be something intellectual, technical, emotional or pictorial in nature. It may be a venting of your thoughts and feelings or those of someone else or it may be a factual description of events. Whatever it is it is selling. Selling is the process of convincing another that what you are telling them is true and that they should take some action on this new information.
Are You On The Dark Side?
The action in the case of reading an article might be to do something about their lives, thoughts and feelings or it may be to seek out more information or click on a link or buy something. Whatever the desired action of the article is you must think carefully about what you want the reader to do, think and experience from your writing and make this the objective of your article or book.
The goal of any good writer must be to have the reader react in some, hopefully, positive way to your writing. Some writers are masters at upsetting people and being controversial; they have gone down the dark road and look for the reaction in a negative way. The dark side is just another way to achieve the author's re-action.
Have You Met Lady AIDA?
Here is an approach that I try to use and I hope it provides an additional tool for your writing toolbox. It is a well known method called the AIDA method and is commonly used in marketing and sales circles. AIDA stands for Attention, Interest, Desire and Action and it goes like this:
A - Attention - Your introduction to the article must draw the reader in and get their attention so that they read on. I try to make the intro a bit challenging or unusual to do that but there are many other ways, such as being bold, controversial, etc.
I = Interest
You must then generate a deep and unshakable interest in the reader so that they want to move on through the rest of the article. Flow the idea into real life situations and make it relevant to their life if possible. Think of situations that have happened in real life, comment on them in an interesting way and use ideas and concepts that your reader can identify with.
D = Desire
You should aim to develop a burning desire in your reader to know more and therefore to keep on reading to the end of your article. Like a good book they must find it hard to pull themselves away. Tease them, squeeze them, tickle them, please them; awake their senses and feelings and make them want, no .... not want ...., need to go on until they have in their grasp or at least in their mind what you promise in your writing.
A = Action
The reader, now filled with feelings of desire and with the momentum of new knowledge must now be energised enough to react and do something about this new information and knowledge that they have. Whether it is to click on a link, view your profile, make a comment, become a fan or link to your article.
Your reader should have the impetus required to do what you want, your objective. They are but clay in your hands, ready to be moulded to what you want them to be or do. What a power trip? Bulwer-Lytton in his play 1839 play called 'Richelieu' said 'the pen is mightier than the sword' and he was bang on! Get the reader to do or feel what you want and you have achieved the goal of your article.

Prasetio
Thank you very much for the tip! As someone new to writing I really appreciate it. Further I like that it is presented as an acronym (sp) for it makes it much easier to remember.
Happy Hubbing!
Nice way to get people thinking about writing. :)
marketing theory to explain how to write good "productive" hubs- great idea! very useful - so an obvious thumbs up !
Very Interesting! Thanks for sharing
This is great information to know. I will try and use this with my next article. Thanks!
Great hub, thanks for sharing!
The AIDA approach makes a lot of sense and must have been what you used to write this hub. I read till the end and ready to vote it up for you!
very helpful.i have learnt alot.
MakeMoneyGoal,
I am going to repeat the words of Karanda, "The AIDA approach makes a lot of sense". I will try this approach in my next few articles. Thanks for becoming a follower.
MMG - Right you are. That first sentence has to do its job, as does the last one, and so do all of those in between, too. Nice article.
Gus :-)))
I like the simple acronym you mentioned here. It's useful and serves as a guideline for those who want to sell.
Thanks!
Exellent hug, this is the area I need to work on, thanks for your wise advise, I enjoyed reading your hug, thumbs up my friend...
Great hub, another great article. I enjoy it.
You've given me inspiration to get writing much, much more. There's lots of guidance.
Sometimes I sit for ages before I can formulate an article correctly in my head.
Good Day MakeMoneyGoal
I voted this hub up for useful. As you know, there are many, many articles on HubPages about how to write winning hubs and so forth. Truth be told, most of the sound the same. But this one genuinely offered something different.
Of course your hub was very well written, organized, with lovely pictures, and all that. But you've made the marriage of practicality and creativity work for you. The concept of AIDA is very useful.
I like your point about selling. All writing is 'selling.' Much of human interaction is 'selling,' depending on how one cares to define the term.
Lastly, the image of ourselves as King Arthur pulling the magic pen out of the rock, is a great image to have fixed in out brains every time we sit down to write. Again, very well done! And as blake4d would say....
Keep on hubbing!
MMG, words to live by, or should I say "write by"; either way, in life, personally or professionally, everyone is in sales. And if you're not; you're probably one of the millions out of work. 1 in 4 people that lose their job in this country do so because they lack social skills (aka "selling themself" skills. Great article to be read often, to keep yourself fundamentally sound as to one's objective(s). 5 *****'s
I really like a few of the attention photos. Success, King Arthur. Your voice has caught me. I do not protest, lest you disappear from view.
You did a great job here. I like the points you illuminate and will take some time to consider them and how they apply to my writing.
Excellent hub on the attitude needed to make money at writing! I don't really see myself as a salesman, but you helped me realize that 1) there's nothing wrong with being one--after all, we all need to make a living, and 2) I should be thinking like one if I want to earn some money at this. Thanks a lot.
Hi, A good and inspiring article. I have not visited hubpages for ages. Got to read your article and it was a like a breath of fresh air. I hope to apply your AIDA in my writings.
I have also added in facebook.
Thanks a lot.
Make money writing? Hmm? Probably will do better looking for buried treasure, but good article.
I have been selling my articles and horoscopes to magazines and newspapers worldwide for the past 25 years. But am always looking for new markets. Perhaps you can help me!
Life is interesting and so is this hub. I will use the information. I am sure of it. sh
I never considered earning from my hubs. Now I have a new goal. Thanks for sharing!

you have good philosophies in how to write helpfully and attention grabber.
Great Work!
You know the art of writing in such a way that grabs attention and you shared your tips. Thanks for it.
I'm a new hubber figuring out the ins and outs of making money and expressing myself and havingsome fun along he way. Thanx for your article. Glad you menton the dark side as I know I have a darkside that comes thru. In fact, I often finding myself attacking writers, and have to remember I'm not going to acquire friends and allies that way. And right now I still have to write thru some demons that may not be of interest to readers. Right now I don't have enough followers to be concerned about my next article turnng people off, still, I'm ready to start turnig people on.
This hub is really great! It can really help you to start writing very good hubs!
This is the second time I've read this hub, and I still find it really useful and an easy read. Cheers!
:) Just read a couple articles about using AIDA when writing copy! Keep up the great hubs...
Nice hub. Sometimes I have a witty comment, other times I don't. When I don't I just tweet the hub. Gettin' lazy I guess, so I just tweeted your hub to my Tweet friends and Facebook followers. BTW, I use Lady AIDA for all my marketing.
